Biopsy Report, finally...

Laura has been diagnosed with invasive carcinoma of the breast, most consistent with lobular carcinoma. She went in for a mammogram on Tuesday, April 28, 2009 because she had become suspicious of a lump she found in her right breast. After seeing the results of the mammogram, she was asked to return for more complete testing the following morning. Another mammogram and a sonogram were done Wednesday morning. Laura saw the pictures and described the lump as a star shaped object. We met with her doctor, Dr. Thomas Matthews, at the Brigham City Medical Clinic. He told us that although he had seen cases where similar shaped masses were benign, it was extremely unlikely and that this one looked “bad”. He scheduled a biopsy for 2:30 that afternoon with a Dr. Rock. We finally heard the results of the biopsy a week and a day later on Thursday, May 7, 2009.
With the advice of Dr. Matthews, we have chosen to meet with a surgeon at the Huntsman Cancer Center in Salt Lake City. Her name is Dr. Leigh Neumayer. We will meet with her on Thursday, May 14, 2009. So, we start another week of waiting...

Some of you may be wondering about the title of this blog. “Laura in Charge” was selected specifically by Laura, who is, in fact, in charge. You may recognize it from her e-mail address. But, it is also a reflection of her desire to overcome this disease and lead her life in the way she decides. I thought that it might have something to do with credit cards, but she assures me it does not. She also hinted that it could have something to do with a prison sentence. Hmm… If I hear any more about that, I will let you know.
